Post Op Bra

Wow! The time has finally come to order your surgical bras in time for your procedure. This is an exciting time, but it can be quite daunting as well. Having been in the business of fitting patients with compression garments, including surgical bras for all types of breast surgery for over 10 years, let me show you just how easy it is.

First and foremost, you need to find out from your Surgeon, what type of bra he/she prefers. No matter whether you are having your procedure in Australia or overseas, most Surgeons will have a preference:

  • Soft & comfy
  • Surgical grade fabric (more supportive)
  • None

In my business, I have come across all of the above. No matter which type of bra your Surgeon prefers (if any), it is really sensible to have a front fastening bra. Easier for you to put on and take-off, and easy for the nursing staff to check your wounds. So, after deciding on the style you now have to choose the size.

Not all bras are sized the same:

  • Small, medium…
  • 32D, 34E…

For those soft, comfy bras like the Carefix Anna and Bella sized small, medium etc, you will only need your under bust measurement. For surgical grade fabric bras (Marena Brand) you will need to have an idea of what cup size you are hoping for. Usually you will have discussed this with your surgeon. For all bras, you need your under bust measurement (where your bra band normally sits). This measurement is best taken without a bra on. Don’t pull the tape tight – just comfortable around your body. Be careful not to let the tape droop at the back.

Once you have this measurement in centimetres, consult the online chart to determine the size. Do remember that you will have swelling post surgery and that most of these bras are made overseas to suit a wide variety of body shapes. So, always go bigger in the band than smaller if you are at the upper end of the scale.

For example, your under bust measures 83cm and you are hoping for D or bigger – choose large (38E). The cups on these bras are extremely stretchy and will fit all bust sizes. When choosing Surgical Grade fabric bras, bear in mind that the band and cups are very small. Always err on the larger size.
